The Barren Academy of Virtual and Expanded Learning (BAVEL) is a fully accredited, diploma granting public high school recognized by the Kentucky Department of Education. BAVEL curriculum is provided primarily by Florida Virtual Global Schools (FLVS) and Kentucky Education Television (KET), in addition to having partnerships with three Kentucky colleges and universities. Students may enroll in BAVEL to take core courses, Advanced Placement courses, dual credit courses, study foreign languages, accelerate their learning or to make up credits. All teachers hold state certifications and are well qualified. Courses meet state and national standards.
Who We Serve
BAVEL serves a diverse population of students including gifted and talented, home school, as well as at-risk students. Our main focus is to provide an alternate environment to students who cannot, or choose not to, attend the traditional high school but still want to earn a Kentucky high school diploma. Some students who could benefit from our school are those who:
- Want a different learning environment -- feel socially isolated, are uncomfortable in crowds or in the traditional classroom, or prefer to learn independently
- Have a medical condition or physical limitation
- Want to supplement homeschool or private school curriculum
- Need to work during the day and complete their coursework at night
- Do not feel challenged in their current educational environment and want to accelerate their academic program
BAVEL Enrollment Models
BAVEL PLUS
The BAVEL Plus model is tuition based. BAVEL students or school districts are responsible for paying the tuition cost for the course(s) enrolled.
While BAVEL provides limited support for resolving any issues, students or school districts are responsible for monitoring and encouraging completion of course work.
Upon completion, BAVEL will send a Final Grade Report of completed courses.
BAVEL ENHANCED
The BAVEL Enhanced model is for students who receive the “full” BAVEL experience.* In this model, BAVEL receives funding based on Average Daily Attendance (ADA), requiring only a $50 refundable deposit per course.
At BAVEL, we have a reputation for superior customer service, and we pride ourselves in the human touch each step of the way. Following initial admission, our staff continues to communicate with students.
BAVEL staff are there for students and their families to provide counseling regarding:
*course progress
*current grades
*post secondary plans
Upon completion, BAVEL prepares and sends a Final Grade Report of completed courses and records grades to the student’s official transcript.
*This option is also available for districts seeking supplementary courses that are willing to sign a Dual Enrollment contract with Barren County Schools.
