Pictured left to right: CheyAnne Fant (Director of Nutrition Services)  Tara Miller (T.H. E. 5th grader) and Jon Hall (Principal of Temple Hill Elementary School)

On Wednesday, February 25th, 2015 Tara Miller was eating lunch at school just like any other day, but that lunch became a time to remember.    Miller took time to rate the food items at Temple Hill Elementary School, and her rating was drawn as the winner, one of over 2000 iPad Mini contest entries collected by Barren County Nutrition Services.   During the prize delivery, CheyAnne Fant, Director of Nutrition Services and 21st Century Programs, announced that the overall food ratings averaged 4 out of 5 stars.  “This is just a great example of how our meals are both appealing and nutritious,” Fant said, “We are so proud of the Nutrition Services staff members who care about how they provide meal services to our student, and these ratings show just that.”  The iPad Mini was donated to the Nutrition Services Department through a rebate program with a General Mills.

Barren County Schools Endorses Kentucky Safe Schools Week

The Kentucky Center for School Safety announces Kentucky Safe Schools Week tol be observed October 19-25, 2014.

This year’s theme “LEAN On Me; Stop the Bullying!” focuses on the culture of the school and the interdependence of students and staff to make their school safe, warm and welcoming.  Within this overall culture students will be encouraged to support each other, connect with the staff and be diligent as they watch out for others in need. Fundamental to the “LEAN On Me” concept is straight from the song lyrics, “sometimes in our lives we all have pain and we all have sorrow” learning to depend on fellow classmates, trust the adults at school and to treat others well.  This “culture of kindness” will support the subtitle of “STOP the Bullying” by getting to the root of the problem before episodes escalate. Click the icon above to take the "LEAN on Me; Stop Bullying!" Pledge.

Barren County Schools takes a Proactive Approach to Local Ebola Concerns

Due to recent questions and concerns expressed to us about an employee traveling to Africa and returning back to work at one of our schools, we would like to release the following information.  A Barren County School Employee did recently travel to East Africa and visited the eastern areas of Kenya.  According to information provided to us by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), this is not an area in which the virus is present and should not present a risk.  The virus is present in the Western Countries of: the Congo, Guinea, Liberia, Nigeria, Senegal and Sierra Leone.

Assistant Superintendent of Barren County Schools, Mark Wallace explained, “One of several precautions being put into place is that the employee is taking a voluntary paid leave of absence.”  The decision to take the leave has nothing to do with potential risk, but rather to remove anxiety of all involved.  The safety of our students and staff is our first concern.  We have been in contact with the CDC and local medical experts and are following all recommended procedures.  Again, there is no indication that the employee was in the “hot zone” areas for the virus; and presents no risk according to CDC guidelines.”  The CDC recommends that the public visit their website, for more information.

AT Student is Honored Guest at State Capitol
Olivia Crowe, a sixth grade student at Austin Tracy Elementary School, spent March 20th in Frankfort as a Student Legislative Page. Olivia was chosen to represent Southern Barren Family Resource Center. Olivia was assigned to Senator David Givens for the day. Mr. Givens explained the agenda for the day and what each bill would be about that was discussed.
One bill that Olivia was interested in and was hoping it would be on the agenda for the day was whether the State was going to excuse some school days due to this year's inclement weather. She learned that the House and Senate had two different ideas on the topic, and it was going back and forth between them.
Olivia said that she enjoyed the whole experience to see her State Senator in action!
