Reading Mastery
Students in grades K-3 utilize the Reading Mastery Program.  This is a direct instruction program that is research based.  Lessons consist of practice with sounds and words followed by guided reading of a story.  It is important to utilize repeated readings in order to aide in the development of reading fluency.  Your child will receive homework based upon the lesson/story that they completed each day with me.  Please encourage them to read this story through at least two times.  Students are taught to "track and tap" as they read.  They are to place both hands on their book.  One hand stabilizes their book while the other is used to track under the words as they read them.  They are to tap once for commas and twice on periods to assist them in the natural pauses of speech.  Students are taught in this manner so that they read as they speak.  Upon the second read through, ask your child questions throughout the story about what they are reading focusing on who, what , when and where.

Sight Words
Some students will have instruction that focuses on the development of basic sight words in addition to their current reading program.  These words usually come from the Dolch Basic Sight Word List.  Students will be given a list of words (usually 10 at a time) to master.  Mastery is demonstrated once they accuratly identify the words on 3 consecutive sessions.
