On February 20, 2026, Kentucky School Boards Association named Shelly Groce, chair of the Barren County Board of Education, as its 2026 Board Member of the Year.
The annual award recognizes outstanding school board members across Kentucky for leadership, ethical standards, advocacy for public education and commitment to professional development.
Groce has served on the Barren County board for more than a decade. During her tenure, the district has expanded career pathways, strengthened workforce partnerships, increased staff compensation and invested in updated facilities and programs aimed at preparing students for life beyond graduation.
As board chair, Groce helped lead the district through key transitions, including the 2024 superintendent selection process and the development of strategic initiatives focused on career readiness, student achievement and community engagement.
“Shelly leads with integrity, purpose, and a deep commitment to public education,” Superintendent Amy Irwin said. “Her advocacy and leadership have had a lasting impact on our students, staff and community.”
Congratulations, Shelly!
