Have you ever wondered what it would be like to drive a school bus?
Barren County Schools is inviting community members to find out for themselves during “Take the Wheel: Driver for a Day,” an upcoming event designed to give potential drivers a firsthand look at the job.
The event will be held Saturday, November 7, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Barren County Bus Garage.
Participants will have the opportunity to get behind the wheel, experience a route, meet Barren County Schools transportation staff and current drivers, and ask questions about what it takes to become a school bus driver.
The event is especially for those who may have thought, “I could never drive a bus.” Rather than simply hearing about the job, attendees can come out, give it a try, and have experienced members of the transportation team there to help.
The goal is simply to give people a chance to see what the job is really like and decide whether it might be a good fit for them.
For Barren County Schools bus drivers, the job is about more than getting students from one place to another. Drivers get to know the students who ride their buses and become familiar faces at the beginning and end of the school day.
It’s also an important service to local families. Each day, students depend on their bus drivers to help get them to and from school safely.
The schedule is built around the school day, with time between morning and afternoon routes. New drivers also have experienced drivers and transportation staff available to help them learn the job.
Pay and Benefits
According to the district’s FY2027 salary schedule, bus driver pay ranges from $18.75 to $24.51 per hour, depending on years of experience. Substitute driving is listed at $18.75 per hour.
Eligible full-time employees may also receive health insurance and other district benefits. Transportation staff can answer questions about benefits, training, qualifications, and the steps involved in becoming a driver.
Whether someone is seriously considering a new job or is simply curious about what happens behind the wheel, Barren County Schools is encouraging community members to come meet the transportation team and experience the job for themselves.
If you’ve ever wondered whether you could be a school bus driver, this may be the perfect opportunity to take the wheel and find out.
